Abstinence Education and School Outreach
LCHC provides Abstinence Education to youth through the Lawndale Community Youth Development Program (LCYD). LCYD is a youth development and empowerment program comprised of school outreach, an after-school program, individual and group counseling and life skills development. As its name “EL-Seed” implies, this program involves sowing positive seeds into the lives of our youth. LCYD focuses on abstinence education combined with other efforts to reduce the precursors of teenage pregnancy and other high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse, poor academic achievement, and poor parent/child communication.
The Goals of the LCYD Program are as follows:
- Reduce the rates of teenage pregnancy in program participants.
- Increase the number of adolescents who choose to remain sexually abstinent until marriage.
- To empower our youth with skills and principles that will enable them to make better lifestyle choices.
The LCYD Program consists of:
Abstinence-Only education provided in elementary and high school classrooms for students between the ages of 12-18.
Youth Enrichment and Empowerment Programs such as “SEEDS” after-school program.
Individual and Group Counseling and Family Strengthening Programs provided on-site at LCHC and in conjunction with community partners at various locations in North and South Lawndale and East and West Garfield.
