Medical Student and Resident Scope of Practice

  1. For all medical students and residents, all patients seen in the clinic must be staffed with an attending physician.
  2. All notes need to be co-signed.
  3. Students who do home visits, visit patients with chaplains or participate in health educational activities will be under the guidance of the case manager, chaplain or health educator. They should not perform routine medical evaluations in these settings, except as supervised by a physician.
  4. A student or resident may not independently give medication or treatment orders while in the clinic. This always must be done in conjunction with the attending physician.
  5. All prescriptions written by students or residents for LCHC patients must be co-signed by a LCHC attending physician.
  6. Students and residents can not independently perform procedures on patients. The attending physician must be present in the room while any procedure is being performed.

Medical Student and Resident Credentialing

All medical students and residents who rotate at LCHC need to provide us with a letter from their training program that clearly states that:
  1. This is an approved rotation.
  2. That the training program will provide malpractice insurance for the student or resident during the rotation. The letter should include the amount of coverage provided.
  3. That the student or resident has been trained in the areas of patient rights, respect and confidentiality.
  4. That all immunizations are up-to-date and that PPD status is known.

Medical Student and Resident Orientation

All medical students and residents will receive an orientation upon arrival. Information about the rotation, the clinic and the neighborhood are available on LCHC's web site. General fire safety information as well tips about safety in the neighborhood will be reviewed with students when they are oriented. All students and residents will receive a LCHC ID and a volunteer HR orientation packet. Documentation of the Credentialing and Training will be kept in the Department of Human Resources.
